Q: Hi, Natalie! A friend in town for a conference asks where to find “Stinky Tofu”. Google led us only to restaurants that have closed. Any ideas? Thanks! Please text to me.
A: That’s a serious foodie request, even some Chinese can’t stand (like my granddaddy–the house had to be aired out before he came home from work) In Taiwan, stinky tofu stands are banished to market corner booths, no one wants to be downwind!). Curious, was it an Asian or non-Asian request? If non-Asian, give them a medal (and an Altoid)!
Funny how trends are. Maligned one decade; foodie hot the next! But it is cheaper to eat as an early adopter…Grits for $8?! Fried Chicken for $20? GPS me to the nearest Waffle House, please. My grandma turned in her grave after seeing pig ear shavings on the latest chef menus.
Sorry, I digress–try Ping’s Place Snack Bar for stinky tofu. Address: 2300 Pleasant Hill Rd, # B-6, Duluth, GA 30096, in the Great Wall of China supermarket, telephone: 404-819-3288 . They don’t always have everything on menu but that’s the best bet, and I did eat stinky tofu there last year.
